Assembling Research Consortia
In tough economic times, the competition for research grant funding has become even more challenging as venture capital dries up and government research allocations are cut. However, even in such times, there are opportunities, such as those available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 or ARRA.
Under ARRA, the US government allocated $8.9 billion towards academic research, most of it over the next two years. Many grants have already been awarded, but many others are still available to compete for through the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NSF), among others.
These opportunities exist for both small businesses and universities and we encourage researchers to seek out others to participate in these grant competitions. Non-US researchers and small businesses can also work with US-based researchers in many of these grants, so we encourage you to seek out others interested in grants by using our <Find a Researcher> function or through the <Forums>.

Research Behavior of Generation Y Doctoral Students (via JISC/Media Wire)
The following piece below described the research behavior of Gen Y Doctoral students in the United Kingdom. Interestingly, UK PhD students are not in the vanguard of early adopters of this technology. I quote from the study:
Emerging findings from a major three-year research study into the information-seeking behaviour of doctoral students have highlighted the need for far greater understanding of the generation born between 1982 and 1994 – commonly dubbed Generation Y.
Researchers of Tomorrow was commissioned by the British Library and JISC to establish a benchmark for research behaviour, against which future generations can be measured – and also to provide guidance for librarians and information specialists on how best to meet the research needs of Generation Y scholars.
Joanna Newman, the British Library's Head of Higher Education, said, “The interim findings of the Researchers of Tomorrow study provide a fascinating snapshot of current research behaviour of doctoral students. It's perhaps surprising that so few researchers in the 21-27 range really use the wide range of Web 2.0 applications for research or collaborative working. And when it comes to emergent technology, they're more likely to seek the advice of their peers or supervisors than librarians or information specialists – a finding that could suggest a need for professionals to rethink how best to deliver advice and support in this area.”
What are your observations from your country? If you are a PhD student or Professor, are your colleagues or students early adopters of virtual research environments like MyNetResearch? Why or Why not? Share about this in the MNR Forums.

MNR Tips – Retrieving Old Versions of Papers
Have you ever wanted to retrieve an old version of a paper before you made the latest set of edits? This can be very frustrating and a common problem for researchers.
Did you know this feature was built into MyNetResearch? Go to any Project where you have documents saved, in either the Public or Private Files section. If you have saved a new version, the version # will be 2.0. Click on the version # (in this case, 2.0) and it shows you Version 1.0 and 2.0. Click 1.0 to download the last version. Clever, yes?
Not only clever, but very crucial for lab researchers and others who need a date-stamped record of document origin or need to see previous versions of documents.
Grants and More Grants
For those faculty interested in grants, take a look at these two interesting grant proposals:
(1) Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems (VOSS) .
National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a new Grant Competition - From the RFP:
"The Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems (VOSS) program supports fundamental scientific research, particularly advances in social, organizational and design science understanding, directed at advancing the understanding of how to develop virtual organizations and under what conditions virtual organizations can enable and enhance scientific, engineering, and education production and innovation. Levels of analysis may include (but are not limited to) individuals, groups, organizations, and institutional arrangements. Disciplinary perspectives may include (but are not limited to) anthropology, complexity sciences, computer and information sciences, decision and management sciences, economics, engineering, organization theory, organizational behavior, social and industrial psychology, public administration, political science and sociology. Research methods may span a broad variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, including (but not limited to): ethnographies, surveys, simulation studies, experiments, comparative case studies, and network analyses."
$3 million will fund 8-18 grants ($50,000 to $400,000). The important date is:
Application Due Date(s): January 25, 2010

(2) Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI)
National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a new Grant Competition - From the RFP:
Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) is NSF’s bold five-year initiative to create revolutionary science and engineering research outcomes made possible by innovations and advances in computational thinking. Computational thinking is defined comprehensively to encompass computational concepts, methods, models, algorithms, and tools. Applied in challenging science and engineering research and education contexts, computational thinking promises a profound impact on the Nation’s ability to generate and apply new knowledge. Collectively, CDI research outcomes are expected to produce paradigm shifts in our understanding of a wide range of science and engineering phenomena and socio-technical innovations that create new wealth and enhance the national quality of life.
CDI seeks ambitious, transformative, multidisciplinary research proposals within or across the following three thematic areas:
- From Data to Knowledge: enhancing human cognition and generating new knowledge from a wealth of heterogeneous digital data;
- Understanding Complexity in Natural, Built, and Social Systems: deriving fundamental insights on systems comprising multiple interacting elements; and
- Virtual Organizations: enhancing discovery and innovation by bringing people and resources together across institutional, geographical and cultural boundaries.
$36 million will fund 30 grants. The key dates are:
Application Due Date(s): February 4 and 5, 2010
