Why don’t we see more research collaborations between universities and industry? According to Bozeman and Lee’s study “Impact of Research Collaboration on Scientific Productivity,” only 6% of academic researchers’ time is spent collaborating with industry researchers. I find this very strange, given that there are numerous benefits that derive to both universities and companies from joint collaborations.

For example, academic researchers can gain access to cutting-edge scientific equipment not always available at universities. This can help faculty to pursue additional lines of research that, which can contribute to faculty productivity in terms of external funds, increased publications and ultimately institutional prestige. In addition, some universities seek industrial partnerships because of the potential financial rewards of patents and licenses that result from the commercialization of academic research.

Industry has a lot to gain as well. Collaboration with universities can stimulate a company’s internal R&D programs. It can help industrial scientists to identify cutting-edge research which can give companies a competitive edge. The association between universities and company sponsors also enhances a company’s reputation. Often, university and industry researchers will coauthor refereed journal articles that can be used as a public relations tool by companies to add to their prestige..
